Hello all,

question related to NDVI calculations for the small file shared by Michael. The raster files have two bands (called band 1 and band 2). I assume they are just called band 1 and band 2 but are actually band 4 and 8, the ones we need for the NDVI calculation. However, I am not sure which one is which and wondering if there is a way to find out that information.

If you know let me know 🙂 thanks

Hi, I am not sure but am curious as well. Is it maybe possible to use the Raster Histogram to identify this (see attached screenshot)?

Layer Properties -> Histogram

Dear Marit,

You are totally right, it's band 4 and band 8 for the ndvi calculation. Sorry for the confusion. We tried to act fast to solve the data issue.

Normally you will be provided with a metadata file that gives you information about the bands.

@roman

Unfortunately, it is not easy but rather difficult to deduce from this data which bands are involved. It can also happen by chance that the pixel values are in a similar peak range. With this data set, the only way to find out is to calculate the NDVI and then interpret it yourself. If, for example, green areas appear on the water, then it is not a question of band 4 and band 8. So, unfortunately, there is no rule of thumb for it.
